European Work Signals New Horizons for Environmental Specialists
 |
|
Representatives from a local environmental consultancy have been experiencing very different climates and cultures to those with which they are more familiar at their Sunderland HQ. |
As part of a recent project undertaken in Europe, consultants from Cirrus Environmental Solutions Ltd., have undertaken detailed safety audits and workplace inspections for Formica Ltd to assist them in complying with new EU Directives.
Formica is arguably one of the world’s most recognisable brands, specialising in design and manufacture of surfacing materials. The company, which currently contracts Cirrus to provide two UK sites with a full range of environmental monitoring and assessment services, chose the Sunderland business for the work in Europe on the basis of their capabilities in both site-work and reporting skills.
Peter Alderson, Formica’s Vice President of Engineering said: “Cirrus provide our North Shields and Newton Aycliffe sites with a comprehensive monitoring and management programme to ensure that we comply with health and safety legislation, and continue to provide our employees, contractor and visitors alike with a safe working environment. Based on our good relations, we had no hesitation in involving them in this European project.”
So far the project has taken Cirrus representatives to Kolho in Finland, and both Valencia and Bilbao in Spain, where they have undertaken work at large and complex sites. Despite a heavy workload, they did manage some time to familiarise themselves with the local areas and traditions.
Stuart Hovvels, a Director at Cirrus said: “The site at Kolho was very remote, set amidst stunning, unspoilt forest and lake scenery. Elk, bears and wolves roamed the nearby forests, and we kept warm in freezing conditions with vodka and saunas – the Finnish being renowned for both! This was a rather different world to the one we are used to!”
Following Kolho, the representatives were posted to Valencia and then Bilbao, where they were required to work on particularly complex sites.
Stuart added “Despite the work being rather difficult and challenging, we were assisted by enthusiastic and helpful staff. Again we managed to experience the local areas, exploring beautiful historic cities. We also found sufficient time to watch Valencia FC play Real Zaragoza, thanks to Formica who provided the tickets!”
The work undertaken at all three locations required the Cirrus representatives to rely on valuable site experience gained at the two UK Formica sites over the past seven years.
