Back in Business

Being involved in a devastating car accident caused injuries which left Bronyia Chapman in almost constant back pain. Little over three years on, her journey to combat these ailments has seen her recover and discover happiness with her long-term partner with whom she has started a burgeoning business to help others overcome similar problems.

Bronyia was cycling home when she was hit by a vehicle in 2004, leaving her with crippling back injuries. As part of her rehabilitation she received treatment which made her view healthcare in a new light.

Bronyia Chapman said: “Being prescribed stronger and stronger pain killers only made me feel worse due to side effects. Osteopathy, chiropractic treatment and massage made a huge difference to my health, pain management and my life, as a pain free person is a far happier one! The treatments and the profound effect it had led to me pursuing a career in the field.”

After studying anatomy and physiology in London, she qualified in September last year, and began looking for opportunities to practice her skills. She initially met with Jason Oshinowo, a well-known and respected north east practitioner, when she heard that he was looking to establish a back pain centre of excellence in the Sunderland area, and approached him with a view to getting involved in the business.

Bronyia Chapman said: “Professionally we hit it off immediately; we both shared the same vision about how we could take the best of osteopathy, massage and rehabilitation to create a clinic where all types of people suffering with back pain can come to get expert advice and treatment.”

Jason Oshinowo said: “My experience had shown me how widespread the problem of back pain is – Four out of five adults suffer from it at some point, and it is one of the most common reasons for work absence and sickness. I don’t think it’s an exaggeration to say that it’s an ailment that in some ways is crippling the country. I was looking to create a specialist service that would tackle the problem head on, and act as a valid alternative to NHS waiting lists.”

After spending time developing the business, the couple realised that they also shared interests outside of their professional lives, and became romantically involved.
As their relationship blossomed the plans for their service also took shape, and with marketing support from Pulse Creative Marketing, the couple opened the doors of the Sunderland Back Pain Centre in April this year.

Jason Oshinowo said: “We’ve always been confident that we can help people to get out of pain and get more enjoyment out of their everyday lives. The marketing advice and support that we’ve received from Pulse played a vital role in making the public aware of this. It’s been great to find out that people are willing to embrace our services and are becoming aware of the benefits of looking after their backs.”

Located over three floors in John St., at the heart of Sunderland’s conservation area, The Sunderland Back Pain Centre is fully equipped to treat back and shoulder pain, slipped discs, sciatica, trapped nerves, joint and pregnancy pain, sports injuries and headaches.
Paul Finch, Marketing Manager at Pulse Creative Marketing, said: “Jason and Bronyia’s story is an inspiring one, and the back pain services they offer provide a unique one-stop solution to one of the country’s major problems. Our aim was to make sure the public are aware of the help that was on offer to allow them to get more out of their everyday lives. It’s great to see the business doing so well now that they are up and running.”
