Business experts take The Plunge
Now in its fourth year, The Plunge saw a record 200 students from Redcar & Cleveland College pitch their group business ideas to a panel of experts, who were looking out for evidence of team work, good presentation and the ability to turn advice into a solidly thought-through business plan.
The experts advised groups on their ideas and offered guidance for further developing their plan, before coming back to them in a Dragon’s Den style meeting to pitch their ideas.
Paul Finch, Manager of Pulse Creative Marketing, who volunteered to be one of the experts on the panel said:“I was overwhelmed by the amount of effort and preparation that the students displayed. It was refreshing to see some really innovative business ideas that were underpinned by some sound business knowledge. It has been a great opportunity to work with our future entrepreneurs and pass on some practical business advice on how competitive and fast moving the world of business is.” The winning company ‘Stars R Golden’ impressed the judges with their planning and presentation for an all in one hair styling and straightening tool. The group consisted of sports and fitness students. As well as taking home the winner’s trophy, the group also won £200 in cash to share between them. The judges were so impressed that one member, 17-year-old Rachel Harston, was immediately offered mentoring with one of the business experts. Gary Groom, Principal of Redcar & Cleveland College, said:“The standard set by the students who took part in ‘The Plunge’ this year has really raised the bar in terms of the quality of their ideas and their flare for enterprise and business development.”
Paul Finch said: “I have been really impressed by all of the entries and it was a difficult decision to pick an overall winner, but the winning group showed that they had what it takes to be a real success in business and developed so fast in just three days.” The programme initially developed at Redcar and Cleveland College is also now being demanded by colleges nationally and has recently won a national training award for the college.
